Alaska Cruise!!

Will and I went on a cruise to Alaska for our 10th anniversary. It has been planned for quite a while now, and was just an amazing trip!

First of all, Will surprised me with a beautiful suite rather than the regular tiny cabin I was expecting. We had a large room with sitting area, on the back of the ship with an amazing view out of our giant sliding doors, a full bathroom with a bathtub, huge closet and best of all an espresso machine.

I must be figuring out where to go or what to do on the ship.

Since we were “VIP”s, we got to eat at the special fancy restaurant for breakfast and lunch that no one else was allowed to go to.

I can’t show you all the best scenery photos but I picked out a good selection. I’m trying to talk Will into getting more into photography and selling prints so he doesn’t want me posting them all over the place.

On the night of our anniversary, Will surprised me with an amazingly gorgeous new ring. I had told him years ago that I wanted a new one for our 10th anniversary, and boy did he come through!!

We got around to trying to rock wall on the ship. Well, I tried, and Will succeeded.

All in all, definitely the trip of a lifetime! We were really waited on hand and foot while we were there. Every day at the time we chose they brought us appetizers to our cabin (usually chocolate covered strawberries, yum!) We got a special escort off the ship so we didn’t have to wait in line. I don’t think we’ll be traveling that first class for quite some time (maybe 20 year anniversary? lol) but it was fun while it lasted!!

Catching up from summer part 1

Well, I have some pictures on this computer and some on another so I decided to do this in parts. I need to get caught up now that William started school again yesterday, football is in swing for William and Ben, and we will have lots of projects to post about soon. Hopefully.

Back on June 20th! We went to the beach.

William’s been working at Chuck E. Cheese since June. We visited him at work. Only once, because the pizza kinda sucks. Well not kinda, it just sucks. lol

Skipping forward in time to July… I had to go back to DC area for work, and Will decided to come along (he had never been there) and we stayed over the weekend. Here’s a few pics from that. It was freakishly hot. However, the highlight for me was that we saw fireflies!! I hadn’t seen any of those since I was about 7 or 8 visiting Missouri! Before we left, Ben wanted a picture with me to keep with him:

Then Kevan went to Boy Scout camp. I don’t have any pictures of him there! But Ben and I went up there for 2 days and I took a couple of him. Go figure.

Cool rocks!

Ben did LARP for the first time and absolutely loved it. It’s Live Action Role Play; they use foam weapons and do quests and adventures. Very cool.

Ben spent literally hours waiting for, watching, and doing this amazing marble maze. It has 3 football fields worth of track.

Also at the conference… lots of swimming, ukelele classes, henna tattoos, book buying, chocolate, cigar box decoupage, computer game making with Scratch, talent show (gotta get that video posted!) and more!

Then we headed to Reno for a day. We saw my mom and my little brother Josiah for the first time in 10 years! That was cool.

Ok, then, more from my other computer later!

Day at the River

I should never have waited so long before posting about this trip to the Sisquoc River back in April when it was full.

It was a beautiful day. We met Carmen along the way and headed out. We walked a ways down the shoreline until we found a good spot to settle in.

The kids discovered a bunch of tadpoles…

… and some raccoon tracks.

We had planned to make some miniature boats out of some river willow growing nearby, so we started gathering some good branches.

Then the girls discovered some real branches - driftwood logs, actually - and said, why don’t we make a real raft?

So Carmen, well-prepared, creative and versatile, set to work armed with a pocket knife, some twine and some logs.

The kids set to work wrapping and tying…

and testing out the seat.

Then they took turns trying it out.

Michael even gave Xena a ride.

What a great day! I’m so glad we made it out there before the river dried up.

Kindergarchy?

  • Mental multivitamin: "[D]reary, boring, sadly misguided Kindergarchy"

    • Despite what their parents had been telling them from the very outset of their lives, they were not significant. Significance has to be earned, and it is earned only through achievement. Besides, one of the first things that people who really are significant seem to know is that, in the grander scheme, they are themselves really quite insignificant.
      • They were not significant? How does he get to decide that significance has to be earned, and it is earned through achievement? Significance is importance. Importance is relative. Joseph is completely insignificant to me. My kids? Not so much. - post by irsarahbean
    • Raising and teaching my children is important work, but it is not my only work. "Mother" is not even among the first fistful of words in my working definition of self. How could it be? Long before I became a mother, I was just me.
      • Raising and teaching my children is not my only work either. I have a very rewarding and satisfying career. Nevertheless, "mother" is probably the first word in my working definition of self. How could it not be? I made some new people. How irresponsible it would be if I did not devote myself to launching them for the few years that I have an impact! - post by irsarahbean

Purty teeth

I got my braces off yesterday after almost three years! Just a reminder, what my teeth looked like before (this was actually after a month or two of braces on the top; at first they couldn’t even put brackets on my incisors because they were so twisted and crowded):

And after…
